In Algeria, a business's first website is often its Facebook page, and its sales team is often a Messenger inbox. Social media is where customers discover shops, compare prices and order. That creates steady work for freelancers who know how each platform is used. Here is what the numbers say and where the opportunities are.
According to DataReportal's Digital 2025 report for Algeria, the country had 36.2 million internet users (76.9% of the population) and 25.6 million social media user identities at the start of 2025. The audiences that the platforms report to advertisers give an idea of each one's weight:
These figures are advertising audiences, not unique people, so they shouldn't be added up. But they show the order: Facebook first, TikTok and YouTube close behind, Instagram strong with a slightly more urban and female audience than other platforms.
Many pages post in bursts, then go silent for weeks. Businesses need a monthly plan, designed visuals, captions in the right language (Arabic, French, Darija or a mix, depending on the audience) and someone who answers comments. This is the core of community management.
Sponsored posts are common, but often poorly targeted. A freelancer who sets up campaigns by wilaya, age and interests, tests several creatives and reports on cost per message or per order brings real value.
TikTok, Reels and Shorts reward video. Restaurants, clothing shops, real estate agencies and training centres need short, well-edited clips with subtitles, every week. Filming on a phone and editing well is enough to start.
With 15.8 million people reachable on Messenger, many sales happen in private messages. Businesses need quick replies, prepared answers to frequent questions, and more and more automated replies and chatbots (see our article on AI).
Smaller but more professional, LinkedIn suits companies that sell to other companies: training, consulting, software, recruitment. Few freelancers specialise in it, which leaves room.
